My Ancestors from Carver, Hingham, Hull, Kingston, Marshfield, and Middleborough, Plymouth Co., Mass.

This post is part of an ongoing project of organizing my direct ancestors by the towns in New England where they lived. I love learning about the towns in which they lived. Please add a comment about your family from these towns or your favorite resources for this area. Much of the genealogical information is a work in progress! I have blogged about many of the ancestors listed, but some I don't know enough about yet to write a sketch of their lives.



Carver, Plymouth Co., Mass.
Thomas Lucas was born in England about 1630, his wife’s name is unknown but they were married Plymouth about 1654; he also lived at Plympton at some point; he died Plymouth in 1679. I descend through their son Samuel Lucas, b. Plympton 1661, m. Patience Warren in 1686 (she  was born Plymouth 1660); d. Plymouth 1716; I then descend through their son Joseph born Plymouth 1689, married Melatiah Cary in 1727 at Bridgewater, died Carver in 1742. I then descend through their son Barnabas born Carver 1729, m. Joanna Peirce at Pembroke in 1753, died before Aug 1778 at Carver. I then descend through Ephraim Lucas born Plympton March 1763, m. Azubah Pratt (b. Plympton in 1769) in 1791 at Plymouth, died Plymouth in 1834. I then descend through dau Mary Lucas b. 1792 at Carver, m. Ephraim Washburn in 1822 at Plymouth, died 1860-65 probably in Plymouth.


Hingham, Plymouth Co., Mass.
Martha Lazell b. 1684 at Hingham, m. Daniel Pratt in 1714 probably at Plympton (he was born Plymouth 1680); she died Plympton 1723. I descend through their son Nathaniel b. 1716 prob. Plympton, m. Mary Cobb at Plympton in 1740 (she was born 1722 at Plymouth), He died Plympton 1796. Then descend through their daughter Azubah b. Plympton 1769, m. Ephraim Lucas at Plymouth in 1791, died Plymouth 1853.
Ralph Smith/Smyth, b. 1612 Hingham, Norfolk, England, m. ____, died before 27 Oct 1685 at Eastham. Arrived on the Lincoln in 1633. In Eastham by 1657. First settled at Hingham. I descend through his son Daniel Smith b. before 1647 at Hingham, Plymouth Co., m Mary Young at Eastham 1676 (she was born 1658 at Eastham dau of John Young and Abigail Howland), died 1716-1720 Eastham. Then through Content Smith b. 1680 at Eastham, m. Thomas Howes 1701 at Eastham.
John Sutton b. 1594 Great Snoring, Norfolk, England, m. Julian Adocke 1620 at Eaton, Norwich, Norfolk (Julian was born 1599 Attelborough, Norfolk dau of John Adcocke and Elizabeth Eldred). Migrated on the Diligent in 1638. Lived at Hingham and then Rehoboth.  Died 1672 at Rehoboth.  I descend through their son John who was born 1621 at Great Snoring, m. Elizabeth Howes 1662 at Scituate (she was born Scituate 1636 dau of Samuel Howes and Ann Hammond). I then descend through Mary Sutton born 1666 at Scituate who married Benjamin Booth about 1690 and died after March 1709 prob at Middleborough. 

Hull, Plymouth Co., Mass.
John Benson, b. ca 1608 in England, married Mary Williams, was an original settler of Hull. I descend through their son John born 1630, married Elizabeth Marsh; moved to Plympton. His son John Benson, b. about 1660 in Hull, married Elizabeth Briggs, moved to Rochester, Mass.
Luke Perkins, b. about 1640 prob in Hampton NH, m. Hannah Long in 1663 probably at Charlestown in 1663 (she was b. 1637 at Charlestown daughter of Richard Long), d. Charlestown 1710. I descend through their son Luke b. 1667 at Charlestown, m. Martha Conant 1688 at Salem (she was born 1664 at Beverly, dau of Lot Conant and Elizabeth Walton), lived for a time in Ipswich, Marblehead, Beverly, Wenham, died 1748 at Plympton. I descend through their son Luke Perkins who was born 1695 at Beverly or Wenham, m. Ruth Cushman in 1717 (she was b. 1700 at Plymouth, dau of Robert Cushman and Persis Lewis), they lived in Wrentham at one point, no death records found. I then descend through Ignatious Perkins, b. Plympton 1720, m. Keziah Davis in 1743 (she was born 1725 Freetown dau of Wm Davis and Keziah Cudworth), no death record yet found.  Some children were born at Freetown and later moved to Wrentham, eventually back to Freetown. I then descend through Ruth Perkins b. 1752 at Wrentham, m. Jesse Pierce 1772 in Middleborough, d. bef Jan 1799 probably in Plymouth.


Kingston, Plymouth Co., Mass.
Ebenezer 3 Cobb (John 2, Henry 1) born Plymouth 1671, married Mercy Holmes and moved to Kingston where he died 1752. I then descend through his son Nathaniel Cobb born Plymouth 20 Feb 1698, married Mary Waterman of Plymouth and raised his father there. My line is then through his daughter Mary Cobb born Plymouth 1722, m. Nathaniel Pratt of Plympton and died there 19 Oct 1811.
Robert Cushman (Thomas 3, Thomas 2, Robert 1) b. 1664 at Plymouth 1664, raised Plympton, married Persia Lewis, moved to Kingston where he died 7 Sept 1757.I descend through their daughter Ruth who married Luke Perkins. They lived in Wrentham where Luke worked as a blacksmith but may have returned to area, living at Plympton. Need to do more research. I descend through their son Ignatious who was born July 1720 at Plympton, married Keziah Davis of Freetown. Lived at Wrentham then again lived in area at Freetown.
John Gray, b. Plymouth 1661, son of Edward Gray and Mary Winslow, m. Joanna Morton there in 1686, moved to Kingston where he died in 1732. Then through Anne Gray born Plymouth 1691, m. John Tinkham 1714, died Kingston Sept 1730.
Ephraim TInkham, b. 1618 Barnstaple, Devonshire, migrated 1634, m. Mary Browne before Oct 1647 at Plymouth.  Mary was born about 1626, the daughter of Mayflower passenger Peter Browne. Moved to Duxbury but was back in Plymouth where he died 1684-85. I descend through their son Helkiah, born Plymouth 1655, m. Ruth ___ about 1685, died Plymouth after May 1718. Then through son John born 1689, Plymouth, m. Anne Gray 1714 at Plymouth (b. 1691 Plymouth, daughter of John Gray and Joanna Morton), died 1730 at Kingston. Then through Ann Tinkham, born Kingston 1726, married Samuel Fuller in 1747 at Kingston.
John Washburn, b. 1597 at Evesham, Worcester, England, m. Margery Moore 1618 at Bengeworth, Worcester (she was born 1588 at Bengeworth, dau of Robert Moore and Ellen Taylor). He came to Plymouth in 1632. Moved to Duxbury before 1643 and Bridgewater after 1666. Died after 17 March 1671, possibly at Bridgewater. I descend through his son Phillip 2 Washburn who was born Evesham about 1624, m. Elizabeth Irish 1664 at Bridgewater (she was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Irish, b. prob Duxbury 1639-44), died after 19 Aug 1700 at Bridgewater or Duxbury. Then descend through their son John  3 Washburn b. about 1672, m. Lydia Billington about 1698 prob at Plymouth (Lydia was born about 1677 at Marshfield, dau of Isaac Billington and Hannah Glass). He m. 2nd Wybra Bumpus abt 1717 and 3d 1744 Mehitable (Barrow) Wright. John died 1750 at Kingston. Then descend through John and Lydia’s son John 4 Washburn, born Plymouth 1699, m. Abigail Phillips 1727 at Kingston (Abigail born 1699 at Marshfield, dau of Benjamin Philips and Sarah Thomas), died 1768 at Plymouth. Then descend through Seth 5 Washburn, born Plymouth 1738, m 1st Fear Howard in 1765, 2nd Anna Fullerton in 1785, 3rd Deborah Wright in 1792 (Deborah was born Plympton 1749, dau of Joseph Wright and Sarah Brewster). Seth died Plymouth in 1826. I then descend through Seth and Deborah’s son Ephraim 6 Washburn b. 1794 at Plymouth, m. Mary Lucas 1822 at Plymouth (Mary was born Carver 1792, dau of Ephraim Lucas and Azubah Pratt), 2nd Deborah Morey 1798 at Plymouth.  Ephraim died Plymouth 1822. I then descend through their son Seth 7 Washburn, born Plymouth 1828, m. Mary Briggs Bumpus 1856 at Wareham (Mary was born 1840 at Wareham, dau of Rowland Bumpus and Lucy Nye Pierce), died 1921. in Plymouth. I then descend through their son Charles Francis 8 Washburn, b. Plymouth 1857, m. Hattie Maria Benson in 1878 at Plymouth (Hattie was born 1861 at Plymouth, dau of Josiah Benson and Aurilla West Nye), died Plymouth 1941. I then descend through Carrie Clyfton Washburn born Plymouth 1896, m. Everett William Ellis 1914 at Plymouth, died 1974 at Plymouth. 


Marshfield, Plymouth Co., Mass.
Isaac Billington b ca 1644 at Middleborough; m Hannah Glass and lived at Marshfield. Their daughter Lydia left Marshfield, marrying John Washburn of Duxbury.
Edward 1 Bumpus, b. ca 1603. Not sure how I descend from him but know I do as he was the only person of the name in early Massachusetts. He was of Marshfield, also owned land at Dartmouth, Middleboro and Duxbury.
Abigail Phillips, born Marshfield 1699 dau of Benjamin Phillips and Sarah Thomas (who I don’t know anything about yet). She married John Washburn in 1727 at Kingston. She married first Josiah Johnson. She died Plymouth 1782.
Robert Waterman, b. ca 1608 at Norwich, Norfolk, England. He arrived Plymouth 1636, m. Elizabeth Bourne 1638 at Plymouth (Elizabeth was b. 1618 at Kempsey, Worcestershire, dau of Thomas Bourne and Elizabeth Rouse). He settled at Marshfield and died there in 1652. I descend through their son John Waterman, b. 1642 in Marshfield, m. Ann Sturtevant in 1665 at Plymouth (Ann was born 1647, dau of Samuel and Ann Sturtevant ), d. Plympton 1718. I then descend through their son Samuel b. Plymouth 1666, m. Mercy Ransome 1692 at Taunton (she was the daughter of Robert Ransome of Plymouth), m. 2nd Bethia ____, d. 1718 at Plymouth. He was living at Marshfield in 1688/9 when he sold land. I then descend through Samuel and Mercy’s daughter Mary b. before 3 August 1697, m. Nathaniel Cobb 1720 at Plymouth.
 

Middleborough, Plymouth Co., Mass.
Elisha Benson, born Middleborough 1731, m. Sarah Steward, moved to Woodstock VT where he died in 1813. Son Moses Benson, b. Middleborough 1774, m. Experience Gibbs, died Woodstock in 1822. I descend through Elisha’s grandson Isaac Benson, born Woodstock, Vermont, then lived in Middleborough and Plymouth, Mass. , died in Somerville, Mass.
Francis Billington, b. ca 1606, Mayflower passenger raised in Plymouth; m. Christian Penn, moved to Middleborough where he died 3 Dec 1684. I descend through their son Isaac b. ca 1644, married Hannah Glass, lived at Marshfield and returned to Middleborough where he died in 1709. I then descend through Lydia Billington who was born Marshfield about 1677, married John Washburn of Duxbury, died Plymouth in 1716.
Edward Bumpus, also lived in Middleborough and Marshfield, born about 1603 in England. Married Hannah _____, died Marshfield 1693. I know I descend from Edward and Hannah but I have an iffy generation that I need to figure out.
Samuel Eaton, son of Mayflower passenger Francis Eaton and first wife Sarah; he was born about 1620, married Martha Billington and died before 29 Oct 1684 at Middleborough. I then descend through their daughter Mercy born about 1672 who married Samuel Fuller and lived at Plymouth.
Samuel Eddy, baptized 15 May 1608, Cranbrook, Kent, England, son of Rev. William Eddy and Mary Fosten. Migrated 1630, first at Plymouth, then Swansea by 1651. Married Elizabeth ___ by 1637. He died Swansea 1689. Then descend through their son Obadiah b. about 1645, married Bennet Ellis (it is believed she is dau of John Ellis and Elizabeth Freeman, b. 1649). Obadiah lived Swansea, Plymouth and Middleborough. I then descend through their daughter Hazadiah born Plymouth 1672, m. Samuel Sampson 1695 in Duxbury, died before Dec 1726
Samuel 2 Fuller was born Plymouth about 1629, son of Mayflower passenger Samuel Fuller, moved to Middleborough where he died in 1695. He married 1st woman whose name isn’t known and second Elizabeth Nichols. I descend through his son Samuel with his unknown wife, who was born about 1658 probably in Plymouth, married Mercy Eaton, died Plympton in 1728.
George Partridge, migrated by 1635, m. Sarah Tracy at Plymouth 1638, also one of the original purchasers at Middleborough and Bridgewater, he died about 1695 at Duxbury. I descend through their daughter Lydia born about 1651 at Duxbury, m. William Brewster Jan 1672 at Duxbury. \
Isaac Pierce born about 1641 prob at Duxbury, m. Alice Chartley in 1681, died Middleborough, 1732. I don’t yet know anything about Alice Chartley. I descend through their son Thomas who was born Duxbury about 1684, m. Naomi Booth, died about 1754 at Middleborough. Naomi was born Scituate in 1691, daughter of Benjamin Booth and Mary Sutton.
Abraham Sampson/Samson, b. Bedfordshire 1614, died Duxbury about 1701, married ___ Nash. I descend through his son Samuel Sampson/Samson, born 1646 Duxbury, m. Esther Delano about 1669 (she was born Duxbury 1640, daughter of Philip Delano and Hester Dewsbury), he died 1675 in Duxbury(?). I then descend through Samuel Sampson b. 1670 at Duxbury, m. Hazadiah Eddy, died Middleborough, 1744. I then descend through their daughter Mary who was born about 1700 and married Benjamin Fuller by 1720 (b. 1696 at Plymouth son of Samuel Fuller and Mercy Eaton), died before 4 July 1755.

  3. My Middleborough family begins with David Thomas who came with his family to Middleborough from Salem/Marblehead, probably by 1669, as his youngest child was born then. A southern part of Middleborough is called Thomaston. Many generations of Thomas' followed. My direct line moved to Maine in 1807, where my grandmother was born nearly 94 years later. Nearly all of my Pilgrim connections come from Thomas' marrying into Pilgrim families.
