Ancestors From Dennis/Yarmouth, Barnstable Co., Mass., Pt 2 L-W


 This post is part of a new project…organizing my direct ancestors by the towns in New England where they lived. I love learning about the towns in which they lived and will list my favorite resources. Please add a comment on your family from these towns and your favorite resources as well. Much of the genealogical information is a work in progress! I have blogged about many of the ancestors listed, but some I don't know enough about yet to write a sketch of their lives. 

William Lumpkin b. about 1604 in England, married Elizabeth ___ and 2nd Tamsin ____; one of the first comers to Yarmouth; died Yarmouth 1671. I descend through William and Elizabeth’s dau Ann who married William Eldredge about 1647 and died Yarmouth 1676. 

John Marchant, he was an early resident of Martha’s Vineyard, also in Newport RI in 1638, Braintree in 1638, Watertown in 1642, Yarmouth 1648. He married Sarah ____, prob. died before 1670. I descend through son John who married ____, died before 1693 prob at Edgartown. Then through his son Abishai who was born 1651 at Yarmouth/Dennis, m. Mary Taylor, died before Feb 1718 prob at Yarmouth. Then through their daughter Hannah Marchant b about 1677 at Yarmouth/Dennis and married Matthew Pease who was born Edgartown. 

John Mayo b 1598 Northamptonshire, m. Thomasine Brike, died Yarmouth May 1676. Minister who was at the Eastham Church in 1646, then in 1655 to 2nd Church Boston, then to Yarmouth. Then through their daughter Elizabeth b. 1630 England, m. Joseph Howes in Yarmouth 1650s, died Yarmouth 1700. 

William Nickerson, b. 1604 Norwich, Norfolk, m. Anne Busby about 1630 (she was born about 1608 at Norwich, Norfolk, dau of Nicholas and Bridget Busby), founded the town of Chatham, d there 1690. I then descend through three of their children.
1.      Nicholas b about Aug 1628, m. Mary Darby about 1663 (she was born about 1644 possibly in Plymouth the dau of John and Alice Darby), and a woman whose name is unknown, he died Yarmouth/Dennis 1682. I descend through 2 of Nicholas and Mary’s children:
·         John b. Yarmouth/Dennis 1664, m. Elizabeth Baker in 1696 (she was b about 1675, dau of John Baker and Alice Pierce), he died after April 1712 prob Yarmouth/Dennis.
·         Sarah born 1674 Yarmouth/Dennis, m. John Burgess about 1694 at Yarmouth/Dennis (he was son of John Burgess and Mary Worden, b. about 1674 prob Yarmouth/Dennis.) Sarah d. 1723 at Yarmouth/Dennis.
2.      Sarah Nickerson, born about 1644, Yarmouth/Dennis, m. Nathaniel Covell in 1663 at Yarmouth, they lived a Chatham after 1715.
3.      William, born 1646, Yarmouth, m. Mercy Williams 1668 (b. about 1644 Eastham, died 1739), he died before April 1719 at Chatham. I then descend through their son William born Chatham 1668-1675, m. Deliverance Lombard  (dau of Caleb Lombard and Deliverance Fuller) about Jan 1700, died 1742 at Chatham.


Samuel Ryder, b. 1601 Newport Paynell, Buckinghamshire, m. Ann Gamlett, 1628 Northamptonshire, died Yarmouth/Dennis 1679. I descend through their son John Ryder who was born 1636 in Northamptonshire, married ____ , died Yarmouth in 1706. Then through son John Ryder b. abt 1667 in Yarmouth/Dennis, m. Esther Hall about 1691 (she was born 1672 at Yarmouth, the daughter of John Hall and Priscilla Bearse), d. 1719 at Yarmouth.  Then through Nathaniel Ryder who was born Yarmouth 1705, m. Desire Godfrey in 1728 at Chatham (desire was born about 1712 the dau of Moses Godfrey of Yarmouth), died after 1749 in Chatham. Then through Esther Ryder born about 1731 at Chatham, m. Thomas Freeman 1751, moved to Falmouth where she died in 1802. 

Richard Sears b. ca 1595 in England, m. Dorothy Jones in 1632, England.  He was one of the first settlers at Marblehead, in 1639 settling permanently at Yarmouth. He may have been a fisherman on Isaac Allerton’s boat White Angel that came into Marblehead in 1632 (which was part of Salem).  He died Yarmouth (now East Dennis) in 1676. I descend through their son Paul who was born about 1637 at Marblehead, m. Deborah Willard about 1658 at Yarmouth(she was born before Sept 1645, dau of George Willard and Dorothy Dunster), died Yarmouth 1708. I then descend through their son Richard Sears born 1681 Yarmouth, m. Hope Howes 1706 at Yarmouth (Hope was born about 1682 at Yarmouth, daughter of Samuel and Rebecca Howes), died Chatham 1718. Then through Paul Sears b. Chatham abt 1710, m. Anna Atkins about Feb 1730 at Eastham (Anna was born Eastham 1713 the dau of Joseph Atkins and Martha Pease), he died after 1752. I then descend through Hope Sears (one of Paul and Anna’s 10! Daughters, who was born 1731, Chatham, m. Thomas Howes and lived in Harwich. 


Nicholas Snow b. about 1600 in England, m. Constance Hopkins 1623-27 at Plymouth (she was born Hampshire 1606 dau of Stephen Hopkins), died 1676 at Eastham.  He came to Plymouth in 1623 on the Anne. He lived in Plymouth but by 1645 was at Eastham.  I descend through two of their children:
1.      Joseph Snow, born Plymouth about 1634, m. Mary ____ about 1670, died 1723 at Eastham. I descend through who was probably their son, Thomas Snow, but haven’t found proof. He married Priscilla Butler dau of John Butler of Edgartown. Then through their son Thomas born before 1740 m. Elizabeth Nickerson 1753 at Yarmouth (she was born 1730 at Yarmouth dau of John Nickerson), died 1813, Harwich. Then through their daughter Priscilla who was born Yarmouth 1767 at Yarmouth, m. Richard Chase 1792 (he was born 1766 at Harwich, son of Samuel Chase) died Edgartown 1849.
2.      John Snow, b. about 1638, prob. Plymouth, m Mary Smalley 1677 at Plymouth (she was born 1647 at Plymouth, dau of John Smalley), died before April 1692 at Plymouth. Then their daughter Rebecca born Plymouth 1676, m. Benjamin Small about 1694 (he was born in Maine about 1665, son of Francis Small), died 1753 at Salisbury CT. 

Hugh Stewart, last name sometimes Stuard, b. about 1650, early Chatham settler, m. Waitstill Deane about 1672 in Yarmouth (I haven’t found her parents, birth info).  In Falmouth in 1669 and Yarmouth a little later. He died Chatham between 1711-1716. I descend through their son Joseph Stewart who was born about 1688 at Chathan, married Mary ____, died after 1763 probably at Chatham. Then through Lydia Stewart born about 1708, m. Shubael Baker 1733 at Chatham, died 1786, probably at Dennis. 

Richard “The Tailor” Taylor, born about 1620, was at Yarmouth by 1644, died in shipwreck off the coast of Duxbury in 1673 with his wife Mary Whelden. Mary was born 1621 at Basford, Nottinghamshire, the daughter of Gabriel Whelden. He was called Richard the Tailor to differentiate him from Richard “the Rock” Taylor (who had a large boulder in his yard). I love early Cape Cod! I descend through their daughter Mary, b. about 1653, who married Abishai Marchant about 1673, died Yarmouth 1718. 

William Twining, birth unknown, married to Anne ___ and Anna Doane. He first appears in records in 1641. Moved to Yarmouth and then Eastham where he died in     I descend through the daughter of William and Anne, Isabel, who m. Francis Baker at Plymouth and moved to Yarmouth/Dennis where she raised her family, dying there in 1706. 

Gabriel Whelden, b. about 1590, possibly Basford, Nottinghamshire, m. 1st Jane ___ before 1611, 2nd  Margaret ____. He died Malden, Mass., 1654. He migrated 1638, settling first at Dedham, moving to Yarmouth 1639 (in an area that became Dennis), finally to Malden in 1648. I descend through Gabriel and Jane’s daughter Mary b. 1621 Basford, Nottinghamshire, m. Richard Taylor of Yarmouth/Dennis.

Robert Wixon, b. ca 1617 in England, m. Alice ____, probably at Eastham, died 1686 at Eastham. He was at Plymouth in 1634 and Eastham by 1648. Many believe Alice was a Native American. He lived in an area of Eastham that at the time was Harwich and now is in Orleans. I descend through their son Barnabas born prob Eastham 1660-1663, m. Sarah Remick (Sarah was born 1663, the daughter of Christian Remick of Kittery, Maine), died after June 1735 at Yarmouth. Barnabas lived in an area of Yarmouth that would become Dennisport. I then descend through Joshua Wixon, born 1695 at Plymouth, m. Hannah Baker in 1715 at Yarmouth (Hannah was born 1696, the daughter of Daniel Baker and Elizabeth Chase) and 2nd Elizabeth Chase  in 1731 at Yarmouth. Joshua may have moved to the Oblong, now Putnam County, New York. I then descend through Reuben Wixon, b. Yarmouth 1717, m. Dorcas Chase 1746 Harwich (Dorcas was the daughter of William Chase and Dorcas Baker), died 1799, at Dennis. I then descend through their son Job Wixon, b. Dennis 1759, m. Desire Chase 1785 (Desire was born about 1755, dau of Sylvanus Chase and Charity Chase), died 1813 at Dennis. I descend through their daughter Rosanna, b. 1789 at Harwich, m. James Harding Eldredge 1818 at Harwich, died Denisport in 1868. 

Peter Worden, b 1589 at Clayton, Lancashire, m. ____, died Yarmouth, 1639. He was in Yarmouth (now East Dennis) before it became an official settlement. He probably came on the ship Little James in 1634. I descend through his son Peter, born 1609 in England, m. Mary ____, died 1681 at Yarmouth. I then descend through daughter Mary Worden b. Yarmouth abt 1639, m. John Burgess 1657 at Sandwich, died 1723.

    As a longtime genealogist from Cape Cod, I enjoy your blog and find we have many connections which is not unusual for Cape Codders. Of the men you mentioned in your blog, 6 of them are my 9th great grandfathers, two are 8th and two are 7th. I am not directly related to Robert Wixon or Samuel Ryder. I was born and grew up in Harwichport and have assembled a genealogy of over 16,000 people a good number of whom are from Harwich, Chatham or Dennis.
