This post is part of a new project…organizing
my direct ancestors by the towns in New England where they lived. I love
learning about the towns in which they lived and will list my favorite
resources. Please add a comment on your family from these towns and your favorite
resources as well. Much of the genealogical information is a work in progress! I have
blogged about many of the ancestors listed, but some I don't know enough about
yet to write a sketch of their lives.
Richard 7 Chase
(Samuel 6, Richard 5, Thomas 4 , John 3, William 2, William 1 Chase), born
Harwich 1766, married Priscilla Snow about 1792 (she was born Yarmouth 1767 dau
of Thomas Snow and Priscilla Butler). They lived at Brewster where he died in
1850. I then descend through their daughter Priscilla b. 1796 Harwich, m.
Oliver Kelley in 1815, died Harwich 1882.
John 2
Dillingham, son of Edward and Ursula Dillingham, b. 1629, lived in Sandwich, married Elizabeth
Feake there in 1651 (Elizabeth was baptized 1633 in London, daughter of Henry
Feake and Jane Woolstone). They settled in Harwich (now Brewster), Mass. I then descend through daughter Sarah 3
Dillingham b. in Brewster, married Jeremiah Jones by 1690 and moved to
Yarmouth.
Isaac Dillingham house in Brewster, some sources say it was built by John Dillingham, ca 1660 |
Thomas 3
Freeman
(John 2, Edmund 1 Freeman) was born Eastham 1653, married Rebecca Sparrow,
moved to an area of Harwich that became Brewster. He died there in 1716. Then
through their son Thomas born Harwich, now Brewster, in 1676, married 1st
Bathsheba Mayo, 2nd Mary Smith (who survived an Indian attack in
Oyster River that killed her mother and brother). He died 1717 in an area of
Harwich that became Orleans.
I don't have many Brewster-based ancestors to have favorite resources there, but a few of my favorite Barnstable County/Cod Resources that helped with my Brewster folks:
Library of Cape Cod History & Genealogy, series of pamphlets, CW Swift Publisher, Yarmouthport, MA, 1912 and thereabouts.
Delores Bird Carpenter, Early Encounters Native Americans and Europeans in New England, From the Papers of W. Sears Nickerson, Michigan State Press, 1994.
Jeremiah Digges, Cape Cod Pilot, 1937
Well I am related to Edward and Ursula (Carter) Dillingham through their son Henry Dillingham and his son John Dillingham, his son Melatiah Dillingham, his son Edward Dillingham, His son Melatiah Dillingham, his son Enos Dillingham, his son Stanislaus Dillingham, his daughter and my grandmother Anna Dillingham
