My Ancestors From Boston (and its neighborhoods)






This post is part of an ongoing project--organizing my direct ancestors by the towns in New England where they lived. I love learning about the towns in which they lived and will list my favorite resources. Please add a comment about your family from these towns and your favorite resources as well. Much of the genealogical information is a work in progress! I have blogged about many of the ancestors listed, but some I don't know enough about yet to write a sketch of their lives.



Nicholas Busby, born England ca 1583, died Boston 1657, m. Bridget ___, I descend through their daughter Anne Busby who was born Norwich, Norfolk England about 1608 and married William Nickerson who founded the town of Chatham.

William Chase born England about 1595, married Mary ___, lived in Roxbury and then Yarmouth (in an area that became Dennis) where he died in May 1659. I then descend through William 2 Chase born ca 1627, married Mary ____ about 1644, died Yarmouth (now Dennis) 1685.  I then have two different lines from William 2 Chase.
1.      Through William 2 and Mary’s son John 3 Chase, born Yarmouth 1649, married Elizabeth Baker in 1674 (Elizabeth was born ca 1648, daughter of Francis Baker and Isabel Twining) and died 1735. I then have two different lines from John and Elizabeth:
o   Sarah 4 Chase, born ___ Yarmouth, m. Jeremiah Kelley about 1688, died 1727 at West Dennis.
o   Thomas 4 Chase, born 1679 Yarmouth, m. 1st Sarah Gowell (Sarah born about 1682 the dau of Richard Gowell and Hannah Remick of Kittery, Maine), m. 2nd Jane Phillips 1727, died Yarmouth 1767.  Then through Thomas and Sarah’s son Richard 5 Chase born Yarmouth 1715, married Thankful Berry (she was born Harwich 1716, daughter of Samuel Berry and Rebecca Gray), lived Harwich and then died Dennis 14 Jan 1794. I then descend through two different children of  Richard and Thankful’s children:
o   Through Richard and Thankful’s son Samuel 6 Chase who was born Yarmouth Feb 1738, m. Zilpha Burgess (she was born about 1758 in Yarmouth, daughter of John Burgess and Alice Baker) and died before 1778 probably in Harwich.
o   Through their daughter Rebecca Chase born Yarmouth 1747, m. Shubael Baker 1764 at Harwich (Shubael was born Yarmouth 1741 the son of Shubael Baker and Lydia Stewart).
2.      I also descend through William 2 and Mary’s daughter Elizabeth 3 who was born about 1656 and married Daniel Baker of Yarmouth/Dennis, died likely in Yarmouth/Dennis before 30 Aug 1711.

Emanuel Corey, born Sao Miguel, Azores 1869, migrated to Boston before 1899 when he m. Margaret O’Connor (Margaret was born Cork, Ireland about 1868, dau of Peter O’Connor and Ellen Cronin). They raised their family in Dorchester. Later lived in Everett where he died suddenly in 1937. My grandmother Marie Corey, their daughter, was born Boston 1906. She married Frederick Johnson in 1932 at Dorchester.

William Freeborn, b. ca 1594 Maldon, Essex, England, married Mary Willson, came to Boston on the Francis in 1634. First lived in Roxbury. One of the founders of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He died there 28 April 1670. I descend through their daughter Sarah who married Nathaniel Browning.

John Hall, b. ca 1611 Warwickshire, England, married Bethia (Farmer?), 2nd Elizabeth Larned/Learned or possibly Pease, migrated to Charlestown and then moved to Barnstable and finally ca 1644 Yarmouth/Dennis where he died in 1696. I then descend through his son John Hall who was born Charlestown 1638, m. Priscilla Bearse 1660-1661, probably at Yarmouth, died 1710 at Yarmouth. Then descend through Esther Hall born Yarmouth 1672, married John Ryder, died Yarmouth 1709-1718. 

Lloyd Johnson, born Lancashire 1875, emigrated in 1898, raised his family in Haverhill, m. Elizabeth Pearson 1898 in Lancashire; 2nd Anna Burke, also lived in Nashville TN, Boston, Cambridge,  ; died Medford 1953. His son, my grandfather Frederick, was born 1902 in Lancashire, lived in Boston and Medford. My Mom, Marie, was born Dorchester in 1936, grew up in Medford, m. Robert Rollins, raised their family in Lexington. She lived in Gloucester later in life. 

Thomas Lombard, b before Feb 1582 at Dorset, England, m. Joyce ____, emigrated in 1630, first lived at Dorchester, then Scituate, then Barnstable. He died in Barnstable 1663-1665. I descend through his son Caleb whom I know very little about; he died marry Deliverance Fuller and I descent through their daughter Deliverance who married William Nickerson and lived at Chatham where she died about 1716. 

Robert Long, born about 1590 at Herfordshire; m. Sarah Taylor, 2nd Elizabeth----, emigrated to 1635 on the Defense. He died Charlestown in 1664. I descend through his daughter Hannah, whose mother was Elizabeth. He was born Charlestown 1637, m.1st Henry Cookery and 2nd Luke Perkins in 1663 and died Charlestown 1715. 

Robert Pepper, born 1618 in London, m. Elizabeth Johnson, was in Roxbury by 1643. Descend their son Isaac Pepper born Roxbury 1659, m Apphia Freeman in 1685 at Eastham, and he was an early settler at Eastham. Then through their daughter Apphia Pepper (b. Eastham 1687) who m. Timothy Cole at Eastham in 1709. 

Luke Perkins b. about 1640 prob in Hampton NH,  son of Abraham and Mary Perkins, m. Hannah Long in 1663 probably at Charlestown in 1663 (she was b. 1637 at Charlestown daughter of Richard Long), d. Charlestown 1710. I descend through their son Luke b. 1667 at Charlestown, m. Martha Conant 1688 at Salem (she was born 1664 at Beverly, dau of Lot Conant and Elizabeth Walton), lived for a time in Ipswich, Marblehead, Beverly, Wenham, died 1748 at Plympton. I descend through their son Luke Perkins who was born 1695 at Beverly or Wenham, m. Ruth Cushman in 1717 (she was b. 1700 at Plymouth, dau of Robert Cushman and Persis Lewis), they lived in Wrentham at one point, no death records found. I then descend through Ignatious Perkins, b. Plympton 1720, m. Keziah Davis in 1743 (she was born 1725 Freetown dau of Wm Davis and Keziah Cudworth), no death record yet found.  Some children were born at Freetown and later moved to Wrentham, eventually back to Freetown. I then descend through Ruth Perkins b. 1752 at Wrentham, m. Jesse Pierce 1772 in Middleborough, d. bef Jan 1799 probably in Plymouth. 

John Mayo b 1598 Northamptonshire, m. Thomasine Brike, died Yarmouth May 1676. Minister who was at the Eastham Church in 1646, then in 1655 to 2nd Church (Old North Church)  Boston, then to Yarmouth. Then through their daughter Elizabeth b. 1630 England, m. Joseph Howes in Yarmouth 1650s, died Yarmouth 1700.

John Porter, b. about 1608 in England, first lived at Roxbury, in 1633 then Boston, then was original settler of Portsmouth RI, later lived Pettaquamscutt, m. Margaret ____ and Horrod Long, died prob RI after 25 April 1674. Doesn’t appear he was a Quaker as most of the Portsmouth settlers were. I descend through John and Margaret’s daughter Hannah who was born about 1630, married Samuel Wilbore about 1650, died Taunton 1722. 

Samuel Wilbore, b. about 1595, probably Braintree, Essex, England, son of Nicholas Wilbore and Elizabeth Thickines. He married 1st Ann Smith 1620 at Sible Hedingham, Essex (Ann was born 1592 Sible Hedingham, the daughter of Richard Smith) and 2nd Elizabeth ___ Lechford.  He first settled at Boston by 1633 and then was an original settler of Portsmouth, RI, signing the Portsmouth Compact in 1638. He owned shares in the Taunton Iron Works and lived there as well in 1648, eventually returning to Boston.  He was originally banished from Boston for being a follower of Ann Hutchinson. I descend through Samuel and Ann’s son Samuel, b. 1622 Sible Hedingham, Essex, m. Hannah Porter about 1650 probably at Boston (Hannah was born about 1630, dau of John Porter who also lived in Portsmouth). Samuel died Taunton in 1697. I descend through their daughter Rebecca born ___ at Portsmouth, RI, m. William Browning in 1687, died 1728, probably in Kingstown, RI. 

John Winslow, son of Edward Winslow and Magdaline Oliver and brother of Gov. Edward Winslow. He was born Droitwich, Worcestershire 16 April 1587, migrated to Plymouth and married Mary Chilton who was a Mayflower passenger. They were a wealthy Boston family. John died Boston 1674 and Mary died there in 1679. Their daughter Mary Winslow born Plymouth about 1632 married Edward Gray and died 1663-1665 at Plymouth. 

Rev. William Wetherell/Witherell b. ca 1600, in England, married Mary Fisher 26 March 1627 in Canterbury, Kent, England (Mary was born 1604 in Boughton, Mochelsea, Kent, dau of Thomas Fisher and Joan Lake), he died Scituate 9 April 1684. A Puritan, he migrated in 1635 with his wife, three sons and a servant. Settled first Charlestown, then Newtowne (Cambridge), then Duxbury and finally Scituate where he was the minister of the Second Church.
