Joseph Atkins 1669-1726 and Martha Pease of Eastham, Mass.

Joseph Atkins was born at Eastham, Mass., on 4 May 1669, the son of Henry Atkins and his second wife Bethia (Linnell).

Joseph is my seventh great-grandfather on my grandmother Milly (Booth) Rollins’ side of the family.

About 1709 Joseph married Martha Pease, the daughter of James Pease and Elizabeth Norton of Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard. Some early genealogies don’t have Joseph’s wife identified, but she is shown to be Martha through her father’s 1711 will (Edgartown Prob. Recs. 85).

Joseph and Martha had eight children:

Joseph born 9 December 1710
Martha born 9 November 1711
Anna born 12 December 1713
Paul born 11 August 1716
James born 25 December 1718
John born 18 January 1720/21
Uriah born 7 September 1722
Hannah born 4 April 1726

I descend from their daughter Anna who married Paul Sears. I wrote about that couple here.

Joseph died at Eastham on 25 March 1726. Martha’s death date is unknown.

As you can see, I haven’t found a tremendous amount of records concerning Joseph and Martha. If anyone knows of anything I missed or spots an error, please let me know.

  1. How interesting! I'm researching my family genealogy and happened upon this site. I may be related to this family through Martha Pease's daughter, Martha Atkins, who married Joseph Hamilton. I'm trying to trace this very same Joseph Hamilton's family and find the link to mine... it's there in the family tree, but I have no evidence he's linked to us (yet). Thank you for your information on Martha Pease... I'm going to use it to fill in even more gaps on the tree. :)

Samuel Smith, son of Ralph, married Mary, daughter of Giles Hopkins of Eastham, and settled in that town. He early engaged in the whale and mackerel fishery, and was very successful. The latter years of his life he engaged in agriculture. He was owner of very large tracts of land, his largest tract containing over four hundred acres, situated in that part of Eastham now Orleans, and extending over to Baker's pond, from a line running northerly from Potonumecot river over Island pond to the mouth of the rivulet at the cove, near the house formerly occupied by Yickery Sparrow, which he sold November 1, 16S4, to a large number of his townsmen. The tract for many years after this period was known as ''Smith's Purchase." His death occurred March 20, 1696-70. His estate, both real and personal, was valued over twelve hundred pounds. He had beside his farm at Eastham, parts of two at Monomoy, now Chatham. The inventory of his estate shows that he was in possession of over fifty head of neat cattle, sixty sheep, and a number of horses at the time of his decease. Mr. Smith had six children but only Mary, who married Daniel Hamilton, and John, survived him. They went to Chatham and settled. Samuel Smith, the oldest son, married Bashsheba Lothrop. of Barnstable, and died Sept. 22, 1692, leaving Samuel and Joseph, had their father's share of the estate. ^Ir. Samuel Smith
