Ancestors who lived in Amesbury, Beverly, Haverhill, Marblehead, Newbury, Oyster River, Salem, Saugus, Wenham, Mass. and Hampton NH

This post is part of an ongoing project--organizing my direct ancestors by the towns in New England where they lived. I love learning about the towns in which they lived and will list my favorite resources. Please add a comment about your family from these towns and your favorite resources as well. Much of the genealogical information is a work in progress! I have blogged about many of the ancestors listed, but some I don't know enough about yet to write a sketch of their lives.

Some mostly Essex County, Mass. towns where my ancestors lived.

Amesbury, Essex Co., Mass

Joseph Peasley, he was from England, married Mary Johnson, died Salisbury (in an area that became Amesbury) in 1660. Received Amesbury land in 1655, was at Newbury in 1641, Haverhill 1645. I descend through their dau Jane who m. John Davis at Haverhill in 1646 and was killed by Indians in 1694.

Beverly, Essex Co., Mass.

 Luke Perkins b. about 1640 prob in Hampton NH, son of Abraham and Mary Perkins, m. Hannah Long in 1663 probably at Charlestown in 1663 (she was b. 1637 at Charlestown, daughter of Richard Long), d. Charlestown 1710. I descend through their son Luke b. 1667 at Charlestown, m. Martha Conant 1688 at Salem (she was born 1664 at Beverly, dau of Lot Conant and Elizabeth Walton), lived for a time in Ipswich, Marblehead, Beverly, Wenham, died 1748 at Plympton. I descend through their son Luke Perkins who was born 1695 at Beverly or Wenham, m. Ruth Cushman in 1717 (she was b. 1700 at Plymouth, dau of Robert Cushman and Persis Lewis), they lived in Wrentham at one point, no death records found. I then descend through Ignatious Perkins, b. Plympton 1720, m. Keziah Davis in 1743 (she was born 1725 Freetown dau of Wm Davis and Keziah Cudworth), no death record yet found.  Some children were born at Freetown and later moved to Wrentham, eventually back to Freetown. I then descend through Ruth Perkins b. 1752 at Wrentham, m. Jesse Pierce 1772 in Middleborough, d. bef Jan 1799 probably in Plymouth. 

Hampton (then part of Massachusetts; now New Hampshire)

James Davis, b. 1583-1588 Marlborough, Wiltshire, m. Cicily _____, lived Newbury, Hampton, Haverhill; died Haverhill 1678. I descend through his son John who was an early settler of Oyster River, Mass. (now Durham NH).

Abraham Perkins, born England about 1611, one of the first settlers of Hampton where he was made freeman in 1640, m. Mary ____,  died 1683 at Hampton. I descend from his son Luke Perkins b. about 1640 prob in Hampton, m. Hannah Long in 1663 probably at Charlestown in 1663 (she was b. 1637 at Charlestown daughter of Richard Long), d. Charlestown 1710. 

Haverhill, Essex Co., Mass.

James Davis, see Hampton.

Lloyd Johnson, born Lancashire 1875, emigrated in 1898, raised his family in Haverhill, m. Elizabeth Pearson 1898 in Lancashire; 2^nd Anna Burke, also lived in Nashville TN, Boston, Cambridge,  ; died Medford 1953. His son, my grandfather Frederick who was born 1902 in Lancashire, lived in Boston and Medford. My Mom, Marie, was born Dorchester in 1936, grew up in Medford, m. Robert Rollins, raised her family in Lexington and lived in Gloucester later in life.

Marblehead, Essex Co., Mass.

Luke Perkins (see entry under Beverly) also lived in Marblehead.

Richard Sears b. ca 1595 in England, m. Dorothy Jones in 1632, England.  He was one of the first settlers at Marblehead, in 1639 settling permanently at Yarmouth. He may have been a fisherman on Isaac Allerton’s boat White Angel that came into Marblehead in 1632 (which was part of Salem).  He died Yarmouth (now East Dennis) in 1676. I descend through their son Paul who was born about 1637 at Marblehead, m. Deborah Willard about 1658 at Yarmouth(she was born before Sept 1645, dau of George Willard and Dorothy Dunster), died Yarmouth 1708. I then descend through their son Richard Sears born 1681 Yarmouth, m. Hope Howes 1706 at Yarmouth (Hope was born about 1682 at Yarmouth, daughter of Samuel and Rebecca Howes), died Chatham 1718. Then through Paul Sears b. Chatham abt 1710, m. Anna Atkins about Feb 1730 at Eastham (Anna was born Eastham 1713 the dau of Joseph Atkins and Martha Pease), he died after 1752. I then descend through Hope Sears (one of Paul and Anna’s 10! Daughters, who was born 1731, Chatham, m. Thomas Howes and lived in Harwich.

Newbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts

Oyster River, Massachusetts (now Durham, Strafford Co., NH)

John Davis who was an early settler of Oyster River, Mass. (now Durham NH). He was born about 1623 in Wiltshire England and came to Newbury as a child with his family. They also lived in Hampton and Haverhill. He married Jane Peasley and died Oyster River 1655-86. His daughter Sarah lived Oyster River with her husband James Smith; she died there in July 1694 when she and her son were killed by Indians.

James Smith, b. abt 1643 prob in Mass., m. Sarah Davis before 1672 prob at Oyster River, died 1690 when he suffered an ailment while rushing to protect the town from Indian attack. I descend from their daughter Mary who was born 1685 prob at Oyster River, m. Thomas Freeman at Eastham 1707, died Eastham 1766. 

Salem, Essex Co., Mass.

Roger Conant who was about 1592 at East Budleigh, Devonshire, immigrated to Massachusetts living first at Plymouth, then Nantasket, then Cape Ann/Gloucester and then was founder of Salem (in a part that is now Beverly). He married Sarah Horton. I descend through their son Lot Conant who m. Elizabeth Walton and died Beverly Sept 1674. I then descend through their daughter Martha who was born Beverly in 1664, married Luke Perkins and died Plympton in 1754.

Saugus (now Lynn), Essex Co., Mass.

Edward Dillingham, born 1596 Cotesbach, Leicestershire, came to Nantasket in 1632, first settling at Saugus (now Lynn), then settling at Sandwich. He was married to Ursula _____.

Henry Feake, born ca 1590, London, migrated to Lynn (then Saugus) in 1633 and then to Sandwich. He was married first to Joanna ___ and then to Jane Woolstone. He later moved to Newtown, Long Island. I descend through daughter with Jane, Elizabeth,  who was bore 1633 in London, married John Dillingham of Sandwich later Harwich, now Brewster. She died Brewster 1720.

Edmund Freeman, b. 1596, Pulborough, Sussex, came on the ship Abigail in 1635, settled in Saugus (now Lynn), later moving to Sandwich as one of the founders of the town. He married Bennet Hodsoll, 2^nd Elizabeth Raymer. I descend from two of Edmund and Bennett’s children. Daughter Elizabeth born England 1624 who married John Ellis and moved to Rochester, Mass. And Major John Freeman who moved to Eastham; he was married to Mercy Prence.

Thomas Howes, born England about 1590, m. Mary ?Burr, died Yarmouth (now Dennis) in 1665. He was one of the three original proprietors of Yarmouth.  Before that they were in Lynn in 1637. I descend through his sons Thomas and Joseph of Yarmouth (now Dennis).
